Gen Z Guide to FI

You are the summary of the 5 people you spend the most time with. I heard that from a podcast. But it is 1000% true. Think about the 5 people you spend the most time with. How much of opinions and ideas do you have in common? How much are your lifestyles similar?

After my roommate/homie for life moved out last year, I was in the unique position of living in the boonies of CA on my own. I started working a lot more but I felt bits and bits of my soul fading away. 

Then, I started filling in my hour commute with podcasts. I also started listening on my lunch and actually while I was working too lol (I always look like I’m in meetings lol but I’m actually listening to podcasts). 

Anyway, it has become one of my greatest hobbies because it is therapeutic and engaging. Each podcast that I listen to is half a person in my social circle because I spend most of my time with the podcast hosts. So, I have 2.5 major influencers in my life from the podcasters I listen to.

My top 5 podcasts are:

1. ChooseFI: over 500 episodes of people living unconventionally and pursuing FI. It makes me feel less alone on this journey to financial freedom.
2. The psychology of your 20s: I love this one because Jemma (the host) has a really soothing voice. She validates my feelings and talks about everything from grief to dealing with parents to romance to impostor syndrome in your 20s.
3. The Slumflower Hour: I fucking love this one because I really feel like Childers (the host) and I have similar personalities. I have very differing opinions than her in some cases but for the most part, in terms of dating men, we think the same.
4. Planet Money: it’s wacky, it’s fun, it’s about economics and weird money rules. It’s my jam.
5. Red table talk: if I don’t watch the episodes on Facebook, I listen to the podcast. I love when people are vulnerable and real about issues affecting them. It isn’t easy but it is valuable for us to have uncomfortable conversations
