There’s a difference between leaders and those who lead.
“Leaders are people in power and positions of authority. We follow those who lead not because we have to but because we want to. We follow those who lead not for them but for ourselves.” – Simon Sinek
I recently listened to a powerful TED talk by Simon Sinek, author of the book ‘Start with Why’. It was about leadership styles and why companies succeed or fail. I’ll have to add the book to my reading list (listening list lol I don’t read). My biggest takeaway from the TED talk was that you have to be a person who leads and not just a leader.
I felt this one deeply because I’ve had 2 bosses in my full time corporate career so far. One was a leader and one was a person who leads. Needless to say, I thorough enjoyed working with the latter. I did not care much for the leader. I did shit talk the leader a bit (a lot) in one of my previous posts on being a selective workaholic.
As I plan to quit my job soon, I am so thankful that I am leaving behind a boss that I am mostly indifferent towards. It makes the decision so much easier and painless. I will miss my team though.
If there’s anything to takeaway from my corporate career so far, it’s treat people the way you want to be treated. Goodwill goes a long way and having a bad reputation is hard to recover from.
By the time this goes live, I will be a few days away from putting in my notice. Wish me luck!
