Disaster Day in Atlanta

I mentioned that I was visiting Atlanta for a conference in my last post – Tea at the Park. Boy oh boy did plans change. I arrived at 11am on a Saturday and we learned that there was a city wide issue. There was no water. Like, at all.

Unfortunately, there was a major main break or something similar that led to a certain radius of Atlanta having no running water. The hotel that we were supposed to stay in and where the conference was planned to happen was affected. The situation reminded me of growing up in Lagos so I was personally unfazed. I thought I left that life behind though.

They refused to let us check in because of the ongoing water issues. The conference organizers were scrambling and while I felt bad for them, I thought they handled the communication poorly. Eventually, around 4pm, they said that the event was cancelled and that they would book us all different hotels for the night. We had to rebook our flights to leave the next day so hundreds of us were scrambling to find new flights.

My new flight was $675. I almost cried while paying. The conference organizers reimbursed us for the flights though so it wasn’t all bad. This sucked so much but it really was out of anyone’s hands. The saddest part of the story was that 3 hours after the conference was cancelled, water came back on in the hotel. Big tears.

Anyway, despite the horrendous day, I had a good time. I met quite a few of my future classmates. They passed the airport test in terms of their good vibes. The airport test is like ‘would you spend hours stuck in an airport with these people?’ The answer was yes.

I also got to catch up with a childhood friend that lives in Atlanta. We had a glorious time.

So I’m back in California for the rest of June (other than my 4-day trip to Mexico which is happening soon). It’s time to move out & find a place to live.
