A pity party in Mexico

TL;DR I spent $1742 in Mexico & I have a few regrets.

I am writing this straight from the balcony of my Airbnb with amazing views of the ocean, living my blogger girl dreams. First of all, I want to start this blog by saying that my trip to Mexico was absolutely fabulous. I stayed in an Airbnb that was on the beach. The views were stunning.

I went for a trip with my MLT fellowship program to celebrate us getting admitted into top MBA programs across the United States. Most people stayed at the Hilton All-inclusive resort, but I split off with a few girls to find a more financially conscious accommodation. Saving money is sexy.

So, let’s talk how much cash I spent for this 4 day trip:

Line ItemCost
Flights$429 + 40,000 United miles
Airbnb$145
Party gurl package (yacht party, nightlife)$841
Food$174
Ubersno one has charged me yet LOL so $0?
Other/Miscellaneous**$153
Total cost:$1,742
Breakdown of trip costs

**Miscellaneous includes e-sim, pre-trip nails & eyebrows, airport parking

I *slightly* regret paying for the party gurl package. It wasn’t actually called that but I’m just calling it that. I enjoyed the private transportation and welcome mixer but the package included a few events that I didn’t attend and a disastrous yacht party that led me to almost having, what I can now describe as, a panic attack. I was in tears, heavy breathing and fucking stressed out on that yacht. There was also a fucking STORM! It took an hour to get from the yacht to a private island and I held on to the rails like my life depended on it. I don’t think anyone else knew where we were going either which was low key suspicious. The island was very luxurious and beautiful. Visiting the island is definitely a memory I’ll cherish forever even though I spent a lot of time in the air-conditioned restrooms to escape the outside weather & insects.

We had multiple mixers and club nights which were fun in different ways. I was grateful that I got to share the experience with great people. I did feel like I had more fun in my Airbnb though. I enjoyed getting dinner with the girls in the BNB & cooking breakfast in contrast to the pool soaking and all day/night partying.

Here are some learnings from my trip:

I am not built for the party life although I heavily respect those who love to party. I want to be home in bed by midnight max. I went out the first 2 nights and on the last night, I gave up and retired early (lol, like Lady Danbury). I was also itchy as hell because I stopped taking my allergy pills for the first 2 days since I’m not supposed to drink heavily with them. So being itchy + panic on the yacht was nightmarish for me.

Obviously, I also learned that I’m not a yacht girl at all. I don’t like water. I don’t like tight spaces. So, I should have known it was a recipe for disaster. You live and you learn. I mean it was fun on the island. I like to people watch and maybe it makes other people think I’m strange. I’m probably just overthinking. I was very sober on the island. I didn’t want to drink and I couldn’t get into the party mood. I just felt slightly out of place because the whole trip was so outside of my comfort zone. A social trip? Me? That’s crazy.

The third learning is that tropical vacations are not relaxing for me. Bugs, water, heat – I’m not a fan. I decided to go on this trip for vibes, but I really know now that I am not built for the tropics. I like me some indoor joy please.

Last, I learned that I love Mexico. I would love to come back sometime with friends. Maybe, I’ll do a Mexico City trip next year or when I’m working again. My one big miss on this trip was that I didn’t explore more of the town like I’d wanted too. I was just exhausted from partying and to be honest it wasn’t super satisfying.

Overall trip rating would be 6/10. Airbnb roommates 15/10. Food 8/10 (should have explored the street food more but didn’t have the strength). I should have known that my introverted ass won’t be obsessed with this partying experience. Oh well! At least, I learned something and made memories.
